If you’re looking for a new flavour for chicken wings try making a mango barbeque sauce. It’s sweet and tangy, and you’ll find your family wishing you made more!
Chicken wings in my household are a staple of our many appetizer meals. There are countless variations, and each member of the family tends to gravitate towards a different sauce. If I’m looking to make one kind that is enjoyed by the whole family, it is with this mango barbeque sauce. It’s sweet and tangy, and it caramelizes nicely under the broiler for a couple of minutes.
The sauce is so simple, only using two ingredients. You’ll want to combine the mango juice and barbeque sauce into a saucepan. Over medium low heat, the mixture will reduce as it thickens. I tend to double or triple the batch as this sauce tastes great on burgers or as a dip. Meanwhile, you can prep the wings.
There are many ways to do chicken wings at home. I like to coat the wings in a simple flour mixture, then bake them in the oven. This way they get nice and crispy, without needing to use any oil. Next, just toss them in the mango barbeque sauce, place them under the broiler for a few minutes on each side. They come out absolutely delicious!
So let’s get to it!
Mango Barbeque Sauce
Chicken Wings with Mango Barbeque Sauce Ingredients
Chicken Wings – I’m often surprised by how much the cost of chicken wings has risen over the last few months. I recommend keeping an eye out for when they go on sale. You can sometimes save a few bucks by purchasing ones that still need to be split, if you don’t mind the extra step. I also recommend buying the club pack size and having some ready on hand in the freezer. Just be sure to lay them flat in a freezer bag so that they can thaw faster.
Flour – Keep it simple with using an all-purpose flour for this recipe.
Tip: Place the flour and seasoning into a large resealable plastic bag. Toss in the chicken wings to coat them. This makes for super easy prep, and minimal cleanup.
Frank’s Hot Sauce (optional) – This recipe does not call for a large amount of hot sauce. In the end, it provides a bit of flavour, without adding too much heat. Feel free to adjust the quantity as you please.
Salt and Pepper – the measured amounts for Kosher salt and ground pepper are guidelines. As always, feel free to season as desired!
Non-stick spray – I use a spray bottle that contains vegetable oil. I use this to lightly spray the pan. Store-bought sprays work fine too, so use what you have available.
Mango Juice – Mango juice (or mango nectar) can easily be found in most grocery stores. It is quite sweet on its own, which makes it balance nicely with barbeque sauce.
Barbeque Sauce – There are so many different barbeque sauces out there! With so many variations from hickory smoked to honey garlic, there are many ways to make slight variations to the sauce. Like most things, if you find one that you like that fits your price point, then go with that..
Chicken Wings - Baked Before Adding Sauce
Chicken Wings with Mango Barbeque Sauce Tools
Below are some kitchen tools that although they may not be required, are certainly great to have in the kitchen.
Baking Sheet – To make for easy cleanup, I line the baking sheets with aluminum foil. Next, I place a cooling rack that fits the baking sheet on top. I recommend spraying the cooling rack with some cooking oil (like vegetable oil), to ensure that the crispy skins of the wings don’t tear.
Measuring cups and spoons – this recipe uses standard measuring tools.
Small Sauce Pan – depending on whether or not you up the quantity of mango juice and barbeque sauce, it will determine the size of the pot needed to reduce the liquids. You will want to leave it uncovered, as the sauce reduces.
Large Bowl – Once the wings have cooked in the oven, I place them into the bowl while they are still hot. I add the sauce, just enough to cover the wings before placing them back onto the cooling rack and placing the baking sheet under the broiler.
In addition you will also need a, a whisk, tongs, and possibly a chef’s knife and a chopping board (if you need to split the wings).
